New prices for taxi services from 1.01.2026

Since the beginning of 2026 г. travelling by taxi in Sofia is now noticeably more expensive. New tariffs have come into force, which increase the prices of taxi services by nearly 18,6%. The change was adopted by the Sofia City Council at the end of 2025 and is the result of a new methodology for calculating the minimum and maximum prices.

The main idea of the methodology is to automatically update tariffs according to economic conditions - inflation, minimum wage, fuel prices and vehicle maintenance costs. In this way, the municipality aims to avoid sudden and erratic increases and to introduce a more predictable pricing model.

After the entry into force of the new rules, the minimum daily tariff for taxi in Sofia is about 0,73 euro per kilometre, а The nightly - approximately 0,84 euro per kilometre. Along with this, the price caps that companies are allowed to apply have been increased. The maximum daily tariff reaches around 1.24 euros per kilometre, and the night maximum - up to 1.52 euros per kilometre.

In addition to the price per kilometre, the changes affect other elements of the service, such as the initial charge and the stopover charge, which have also been indexed to the new economic conditions. The final cost of a journey in the capital is thus higher, especially for night journeys and longer distances.

The taxi industry defends the increase by arguing that costs have risen significantly in recent years - not just for fuel, but also for insurance, servicing, spare parts and labour. Carriers say that without a fare update, many drivers would be operating on the edge of profitability.

For their part, councillors stress that the new methodology sets clear limits and protects passengers from excessive fares, while allowing taxi companies to cover their real costs. The expectation is that in future prices will be reviewed regularly without sudden and drastic hikes.

As a result of these changes, taxi transport in Sofia in 2026 is already more expensive, but also more clearly regulated, and the balance between the interests of customers and drivers remains a key issue for future decisions.
